I have always wanted to be in management as a social worker. In 2017 by accident on my part I was offered the job as a Lead Forensic Social worker, the position challenged me to think outside the box. While undertaking that job It made me feel confident to be in management. When I left that role, I was asked to go back as my team and clinical director liked my work.

I congratulate you for your tenacity and applaud you for stepping up. So my comments are not personal to you but based on my own experiences. I was 35 when I qualified. I had been working at a dementia care home for 7 years before I started my training. At 37 I had good life experiences having had troubled teenage years. All of this informs my practice. But two years after qualifying my compassion would not have equipped me to manage staff and resources. That’s a reality for any recently qualified worker in any profession. It’s sad that in social work we don’t value the time becessary to consolidate our skills, knowledge and expertise. I could not have offered myself to a management role after two years of ‘casework’ because I don’t beleive personal qualities and curiosity is sufficient. It may be I lacked the confidence to go into management but in truth I believe a newly practicing social worker who hasn’t consolidated their practice has many gaps in their skill set.
Our profession shouldn’t diminish the importance of experience, whether it’s quality or otherwise, because that’s how we learn. All professions have management aspiration as a driver but only in social work it seems the clamour to become a manager is so pervasive. I had people on my course who talked about becoming managers before they had even been on their first placement. In my opinion credibility should be built on experience. That’s my observation.

Hi Mark, Yewande here. Thank you for your comment. I will be going into my fourth year of management and still growing and learning. My piece was about providing a real life experience and to talk about some of the barriers and adversities particularly as a Black Woman, but definitely does not serve to be at the expense of or to minimise the realities that not everyone is ready/equipped for the role. I take your point about having learning/experiences, but I don’t believe that should limit those with good quality experience but not quantity.

It’s important as a profession that practitioners practice. I have met too many colleagues who moved quickly into management. This to me is avsign the profession is not working and we are struggling to keep social workers in practice.

Thank you for sharing.

I can relate to your desire to be a representative for others. I am forwarding your article to other social work friends so they too can be inspired.

Social workers I know who avoided management for as long as possible were workers who wanted to be hands on social workers, not the boss. I don’t think my fellow managers have been near a service user in years. In fact many in ASC are not even social workers. I don’t think it’s a decision about confidence, more about career choice. Personally I avoided management until I hit the 15 year qualified mark. Unfortunately, in children’s services no one wants the role and for a young inexperienced social worker that kind of praise is attractive but I don’t really think, as a profession, we’re protecting these people.

As long as, as a young social worker, you’re managing older more experienced social workers and not a caseload, well done.
