It is disgraceful that children are waiting so long to be adopted. What about the emotional harm that this will do to a child? Family courts talk about the ‘risk of emotional harm’ all the time and yet how can this situation be in a child’s best interests when a child will have formed a close bond with their carers in the time it is taking to find their adoptive family.

All these figures prove is that the government should not put adoption at the forefront for funding and start to realise it is not the answer for every child in care and not every child on a placement for adoption has ‘experienced the worst start in life’ , it is far more complexed than that in many cases. More funding is needed to provide ongoing support to birth families so less children enter the care system in the first place and there needs to be lots more focus and support for kinship carers
