If the HCPC is a lame duck that will at least in part be a consequence of insufficient funding and lack of political understanding and leadership. Undermining the independent regulator as a precursor to making social work the only profession directly regulated by government.
Front line social workers (as opposed to Frontline social workers) are already demonised and subject to sanction that all too rarely extends up the food chain to senior management. When culpability for poor services lies with management and their political masters social work will need independent professional regulation.

I agree with getting the media onside and in collaborating with them to tell a different story but I don’t think that the government’s ideology and agenda will allow a social work based on social justice and based on an ethic of care to operate for much longer. I fear successive neoliberal blue, red, blue/orange and blue governments have been gradually converting social welfare (equalising in favour of the poor) into social warfare (promoting greater inequalities).
